Volleyball returns with Senior Early Bird Tournament

The Yukon Schools Athletic Association hosted the Senior Early Bird Tournament on Sept. 17 and 18 at F.H. Collins Secondary School in Whitehorse, bringing together high school volleyball teams from across the city for the first time in nearly two years.

With the entire 2020-21 volleyball and basketball seasons cancelled due to COVID-19, the tournament was the first chance for high school teams to return to the court and prepare for Super Volley, the Dawson Invitational Volleyball Tournament and the Yukon Championships.

Teams from F.H. Collins, Vanier Catholic Secondary School and Porter Creek Secondary School took part in both the girls and boys division, with a second Vanier team competing in the boys division to bring the total teams to seven.

On the court, the play improved as the tournament progressed and serves as a baseline to measure what the teams can accomplish as they round back into form over the season.

Being an early-season tournament focused on playing time and in-game experience, it featured an entirely round robin format and did not have a playoff round.
