U Kon Echelon hosts first of five ParticipACTION mountain bike races

U Kon Echelon Bike Club hosted the first in a series of cross-country mountain bike races June 5 on Grey Mountain in Whitehorse.

With partial funding from ParticipACTION, the five-race series coincides with the ParticipACTION Community Better Challenge taking place in June.

Designed to encourage physical activity, the challenge has a top prize of $100,000 for the community that logs the most activity through the challenge website and app.

The weekend’s race drew close to a dozen riders for the main race as well as a large cohort to compete in the second race for younger athletes.

The next race in the series is June 7 beginning at 4 p.m. starting from the Porter Creek Secondary School parking lot.

Other dates are scheduled for June 14 (Mount McIntyre trails), June 21 (Gunnar Nilsson and Mickey Lammers Research Forest trails), and June 28 (Chadburn Lake trails). Details about the races can be found on the Cycling Association of Yukon website.
